The Riderless Horse  1886
Fredric Remington
Pencil, pen and ink, and watercolor on paper

The Riderless Horse was created while Remington was in Arizona as a correspondent for Harper's Weekly, covering the Geronimo campaign. Although the sketch appears to be an eyewitness account, it is actually based on imagination and tales recounted by the troops with whom Remington traveled. Remington traveled with Company K of the Tenth Cavalry, a black regiment, in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, but he saw no action.
